Research Library in Liberec

This regional library, about one and a half hours northeast of Prague, is in what is known as the Reconciliation Building. Originally the site of a Jewish synagogue which was burned down by the Nazis in 1938, the library now symbolizes tolerance and human communication.

The darker line along the floor indicates the location of the original synagogue's wall. The corner that we can see here is part of a structure that forms the Star of David.

The library is a public library with fiction and non-fiction collections, as well as reference, periodicals, music, and public computers.

In addition to the main library, there are six branches serving a population of about 100,000. This building opened ten years ago, and has 30,000 registered members and 2,000 visits per day. Adult patrons must pay about five dollars per year for membership; children one dollar. CDs are checked out for fifty cents for two weeks.

The entrance to the library, which is a space for reading, computers, and a coffee shop.

Very comfortable cushy chairs throughout, including small chairs for children.

CD collection.

There is a large, active children's area.

They use self-checkout here!
